The PDF already chose an order
Teaching, then water. Not water as a reward for surviving children. Not children as a colorful rest day between dives. The combined HCIA & Journer itinerary keeps the six-plus-two hour teaching spine through Tuesday, then spends Wednesday on a hotel change and confined water, Thursday on pool and dive one, Friday on dives two to four. Students who mentally reverse that order will teach badly and dive dangerously.
Fatigue is the mechanism of harm. A student who stays out on Monday night because “the pool is Wednesday” will be useless in the community center and sloppy with equalization later. A student who skips Tuesday afternoon’s gift exchange to pack camera housings has already treated the host as an extra. Mentors should say this out loud.
Split the story, split the bag, split the risk
Portfolio: classroom main, dive appendix. Bag: modest school shoes and whatever the instructor requires, not one or the other. Risk: classroom safeguarding versus pressure-related medical risk. They do not cancel each other. Families who only worry about the ocean sometimes miss that their child is an adult in a primary classroom. Families who only worry about the classroom sometimes miss ears and no-fly time.
Certification is not the point of the week
If confined water does not go well, the honorable path is to stop. The teaching hours still happened and still count. A culture that mocks a student for not getting a PADI card on Friday will push unsafe dives. journer.org will not participate in that culture. Open Water is skill-conditional in the source language; keep it that way.
Ethics toward both rooms
Do not tell children you are leaving to “the real adventure.” Do not tell dive staff that the school was just a volunteer thing. Each room has professionals. You are the visitor in both. The wreck, if you see one, is not a metaphor for the community. It is a wreck.
If you cannot hold that split, choose one pathway. Teaching-only is a complete, serious product. Diving-only is not what these PDFs describe; they describe diving after teaching. Respect the file.

A daily energy budget
Sunday teach, rest well. Monday community center, rest well. Tuesday teach and close, pack for the hotel change without stealing the exchange. Wednesday travel and pool, hydrate. Thursday skills and dive one, early night. Friday three dives, then stop being a hero. Students who add rafting on Monday or a sunrise volcano on Thursday are writing a different, dumber itinerary on top of the source file.
Mentors should confiscate the extra itinerary. Not physically—socially. Make it uncool to be exhausted in someone else’s class. The combination only works if teaching quality is a pride metric, not an inconvenience on the way to Tulamben.
Talking about both without hierarchy
In the showcase, give teaching more minutes than water, because the source week does. If a student can only rave about the wreck, they have failed combination ethics even if they certified. If a student hides a failed confined-water skill behind classroom stories, they have failed honesty. Combination is a test of whether two competences can coexist without one eating the other.
When to uncombine
Uncombine if a clinician says so, if fear is unmanaged, if Tuesday teaching already slipped, or if the school cannot chaperone two clocks. Uncombining is a success of judgment. The teaching-only route is not a consolation prize. It is the original itinerary PDF.
Chaperones on combined weeks
You need a plan for who is in the pool area and who is still responsible for students who are not diving. Combined weeks split the group. Splits are where people get lost. Count. Count again. Do not assume the instructor is your chaperone for street crossings. Do not assume the journer lead is an instructor. Two professions, two counts.
Brief the non-divers so they are not a resentful audience at dinner. They had a complete teaching program. Say that every night if you must. Resentment is how people pressure friends to dive when they should not. Chaperones police that pressure. If you think it is not your job, you have misunderstood combination ethics. Combination is a social system, not only a calendar.
Sleep is a chaperone tool. Lights-out is easier to defend if you said on Sunday that Friday has three dives. Students who argue have told you they do not understand the source file. Read the Friday line aloud. Boring recitation beats a debate at 23:00. Debates at 23:00 are how equalization fails at 08:30.
Insurance and combination
Ask your insurer whether volunteer teaching and whether diving are covered, separately. This site will not name a policy. Combination weeks fail when a family assumes a school trip rider covers a shore dive. Assumptions are not coverage. Get a sentence in writing from the insurer, then choose the route. If the insurer says no to water, you still have a teaching program. That is the point of a spine.
Do not hide diving from an insurer because you want a cheaper rider. That hiding is how combination ethics fails before the plane. Honesty is a water skill too.
