A structure that keeps children off the stage
Presenting a service journey should sound like a lab report: context, method (brief and roles), what happened, limits, next step. Five to seven minutes is enough. Open with hour totals so the audience cannot inflate them for you. Show materials, not faces. If you dived, give it a separate minute so it does not swallow the classroom.
Forbidden soundtrack: swelling music, slow-motion smiles, you crying in a temple. Allowed: a timeline, a failed game, a thank-you to a named host role without naming children, a packing mistake, a rule you will keep at home.
For assemblies
Schools should preview slides. Anything that would be creepy if the children’s parents were in the front row is creepy. The showcase offering exists to make this a format, not a talent show.
End with what you will do next Tuesday at home, not with “we will never forget them.” Forgetting is not the danger. Misusing the memory is.
Slide count
Six slides: hours, brief, one incident, one revision, one ethics choice, next step at home. If you need twenty, you are decorating. Time yourself at six minutes. If you run over, you will steal a classmate’s honesty window.
Voice
Speak as a guest. Avoid jokes about toilets, poverty, or accents. Avoid imitating hosts. If a joke needs a child as punchline, it is already unethical. Presentations are public conduct, not a separate genre.
Handling questions from the audience
Someone will ask if the children were poor. Answer the question you wish they asked: you do not know families’ finances; you know you taught a short lesson in a host room; you did not go to extract a poverty story. Someone will ask if you “made an impact.” Give the hour total. Someone will ask for photos. Say no, and say why. Question time is where ethics either holds or collapses into people-pleasing.
If a faculty member asks a technical pedagogy question, answer from the brief: objective, cut, revision. If you do not know, say you do not know. Inventing a method in public is how myths start. It is allowed to be a beginner in a host classroom. It is not allowed to be a beginner at honesty.
End by pointing to the next Tuesday at home: a tutoring hour, a revised game, a language class. If the presentation cannot land locally, it was tourism with slides. Structure is not only the order of slides. It is the order of life after the trip.
Presenting as a pair
Split by role, not by who likes the microphone. Scan speaks about the room. Voice speaks about the objective. Materials show a card, not a child. Time the handoff. Pair presentations that become a duet of feelings have failed structure.
If one teammate is ill the night of the showcase, the other should still be able to present the brief because the brief was shared. That is another reason the brief is a promise to a teammate. Structure is logistics.
Do not surprise a teammate with a new slide of a wreck if they chose teaching-only. Combination stories need consent inside the team too.
What to do with your hands
Hold a card from the lesson, not a phone. Phones look like you might still have a child’s face one swipe away. A card is the work. Structure includes props. Choose a prop that could be shown to the host without shame.
