The questions that actually matter
Families often start with price and dates. This website will not invent either. Start instead with documents, lodging type, who is awake at night, and what happens if your child is late to teaching. The guidebook requires a six-month passport buffer, round-trip tickets, and photocopies. Pickup is at international arrivals, flight information, opposite Kopi Bali, under a Journer sign. After landing, your child should message you immediately so you are not left watching a map.
Lodging is a real choice. A Marriott-brand option offers hotel infrastructure, two to four people per room, wifi, hot water, and on-site staff, with transport to the volunteer site paid by the guest. The Journer volunteer house is four people per room, single beds, wifi and hot showers, no toiletries provided, possible water or power cuts, mosquitoes, random rooming, no opposite-gender rooms, quiet after 22:00. Site transport is included there. Choose the discomfort you can support from another time zone.
Risk you cannot outsource
Project-site and lodging safety is the operator’s claim. Afternoon tourism is not. If your child wants rafting, boats, or Kuta nightlife, read the safety chapter and decide whether you are funding that risk. Charter drivers should come from the briefed list. Night movement is discouraged. Child safeguarding runs the other way too: your teenager is an adult in a classroom of younger students and must not be alone with a child or trade private gifts.
Money should be a modest float plus a card that can use BCA-marked ATMs, not a bundle in a backpack. Airport money changers are described as weaker value. Ubud changers come later. Insurance questions belong to your broker; the PDFs do not print a policy number, so neither do we.
Diving adds medicine
The optional Tulamben pathway needs honesty about ears, lungs, swimming, and the willingness to fail certification. Do not push a frightened swimmer into Open Water because it looks good on a winter-break recap. Teaching-only is a complete program. If they do dive, no-fly time after the last dive must match whatever the professional instructor requires, even if it complicates the Saturday airport plan.
How to stay in the loop without hovering
Agree on a daily check-in window. Save Linda at (+86) 18810906728 and WeChat 731163942. Ask your child to send the lesson brief before departure so you know what “teaching” means. After return, ask for the hour log, not only the photos. The family-questions insight article on this site is written for the kitchen-table meeting before anyone pays a deposit.
Passport, copies, round-trip proof, current visa rules verified officially.
Homesickness and hero stories
A quiet, tired message on Sunday night may mean they taught, not that they are unsafe. A stream of heroic captions may mean they are performing for you. Ask questions that pull toward hours and hosts. Send fewer fire emojis. If you need reassurance, use the agreed check-in and the published emergency number, not a classmate’s rumours.
When they return, give them a day before you demand a show. Then demand the portfolio, not the show. Families who only want the show teach students to produce it, including with other people’s children.
Siblings and social media
Tell siblings not to reshare classroom photos. A family WhatsApp is still the internet waiting to happen. The ethics page applies at home.
If your child is the only one going
Individuals still get the same rules. They may feel more unsupervised on free afternoons. Pairing may have to be with another journer participant they just met. Talk about that. A solo family traveler is not a solo urban explorer. They are still in a program with a house quiet hour and a teaching clock. Do not send them with a fantasy of total freedom plus a classroom photo. Those two fantasies fight; the classroom should win.
Hotel option versus volunteer house, including the random-rooming rule.
