A cohort is a curriculum wrapper
Schools should not outsource ethics to a van. A journer cohort is the source week plus whatever preparation, mentoring, and assessment you attach. The in-country teaching total stays six hours plus two community hours unless a written plan says otherwise. That is a feature for safeguarding and for transcript honesty. It is a problem only if your marketing department needs a rescue narrative.
Design backwards from evidence. What will a student file on return? A brief, an attendance confirmation, a reflection tagged to learning outcomes you already use—global competence, language teaching practice, intercultural communication. If you need more academic mass, add pre-departure seminars on Balinese culture, Bahasa basics, and volunteer ethics. Do not pad Bali hours.
Safeguarding and staffing
Two to three volunteers per class is the source pattern. School chaperones should still know who the host adult is and how to report harm. Photograph policy should be written, not implied. Gifts should be pooled into the scheduled exchange. Rooming rules from the volunteer house apply if that lodging is used. Diving, if offered, needs medical screening and a rule that certification failure is academically acceptable.
Chaperone-to-student ratios are a school policy decision not printed in the PDFs, so we will not invent one. What we will say: unsupervised mixing of official guests and strangers in lodging is already forbidden, and unexcused absence already voids a certificate. Use those hooks in your code of conduct.
HCIA and local documentation
Source itineraries are titled HCIA & Journer. Treat that as documented collaboration on a calendar, then ask in procurement who the contracting party is for your year. A 2020 certificate associated with Bali Rastiti Bhakti Foundation shows how hours have been documented with a local foundation. Do not assume the same letterhead will appear without asking.
Evaluation
The insight “how schools evaluate a service trip” exists because too many trip folders are only invoices and selfies. Require a student presentation that names limits. Require a staff debrief that includes what to stop doing. If journer is not willing to discuss ethics and safeguarding on a planning call, do not travel. School journey cohorts, workshops, and the portfolio system are the formats built for you. Apply with your academic calendar constraints; this site will not invent a public 2026 grid.
Where this sits in a timetable
The in-country piece is a week-shaped hole. The learning is the month around it. If you only have the hole, you have tourism with a service sticker. Attach the online rhythm or the workshop. Attach a marked portfolio. Attach a faculty owner who is not also driving the van while marking briefs. If that owner does not exist, wait a year.
Credits: award them for the wrapper you taught, not for imaginary contact hours in Bali. Registrars notice. So do students who will later write statements of purpose.
Equity inside a cohort
The hotel versus volunteer-house fork can split a class into comfort castes. Choose one lodging type for the cohort if you can. If you cannot, brief both groups so the house is not mocked and the hotel is not treated as skipping “real service.” Equity is part of school design, not an accident of parent wealth.
Talking to a board that wants more countries
Show them the hour table and the ethics page. One honest week in Bali is harder to run than a blurry tour of three islands. If they still want more countries, they want a different operator. Do not force journer to become a map. Maps without hosts are how harm scales. Boards that like scaling should be asked which host they just met. If they met none, they are not ready to scale.
