Terms used on journer.org

This glossary is for families who are competent travelers and still deserve plain language. It is not a legal dictionary. When a term comes from a PDF, we keep the source meaning.

TermMeaning on this site
Volunteer teaching weekSource pattern: arrival, launch, school blocks, community-center block, closing exchange, departure.
Community service hoursTwo hours at a community center, distinct from six school-teaching hours.
Volunteer houseJourner lodging: four to a room, random assignment, no unofficial guests, site transport included.
Marriott-brand optionHotel-style lodging in the guidebook; guests fund transport to the volunteer site. No property name is invented here.
Confined waterPool pressure training before open-water dives on the Tulamben pathway.
Open Water / PADI OWEntry-level diving credential described in the source as skill-conditional, with a 30-meter depth limit.
Tulamben (Tulanben)Northeast Bali shore-dive area named in the combined itinerary.
HCIA & JournerSource-document title on itinerary PDFs; described here as calendar collaboration, not a merger.
Bali Rastiti Bhakti FoundationNamed on a 2020 certificate of appreciation for school-teaching hours.
Sign-outTelling the local lead before leisure movement and leaving a contact path.
German two-pin adapterPower fitting specified in the packing chapter.
BCA ATMGuidebook note for UnionPay cash withdrawal.
Service-learning reflectionHour-honest writing that names host authority and limits.
Journey portfolioSmall evidence set: brief, hours, reflection, ethics note.
Child safeguardingAdult standards in a short placement: no isolation, no private gifts, no extractive photos.

If a word is missing, it may be because we refused to invent it. Ask on the contact page rather than borrowing vocabulary from a larger volunteer brand and assuming it applies.

Words we refuse

We refuse “orphanage volunteering,” “guarantee certification,” “impact trip,” and named partner schools we cannot document. If you brought those words from another site, leave them at the door. The glossary is as much a ban list as a definition list.

We also refuse to redefine PADI. It is an external training system. Our glossary only explains how the source itinerary uses Open Water language. For standards, read PADI’s own public material.

How to quote these terms in a school policy

Quote hour totals and lodging rules verbatim in spirit. Do not quote this glossary as law. Do not mix our “volunteer house” with someone else’s homestay product; they are different risk envelopes.

Using the glossary in a parent night

Project three terms: volunteer house, sign-out, Open Water. Read the definitions. Then read the leisure-risk sentence from safety. Parents will try to collapse all terms into “tour.” Keep them apart. A glossary that is not used in speech is decoration. Use it until the words feel boring. Boring words keep people safer than poetic ones.

Translate if needed, but do not soften. “Random rooming” should not become “you will make friends.” “Skill-conditional” should not become “everyone gets a card.” Softening is how glossaries die.

Glossary drift

Do not let “community service” become “charity.” Do not let “volunteer house” become “homestay.” Homestays are a different risk and a different family. Do not let “Open Water” become “snorkeling certificate.” Drift is how families consent to the wrong product. If a student uses a drifted term in a showcase, correct it in the room. Public correction is part of teaching.

Add new terms only when a source file adds them. A glossary that grows with marketing is a brochure. Ours should stay slightly too small. Smallness is a quality control.

Print the glossary as two pages, not as a booklet. If it needs a booklet, it has failed its job of being plain.

A word students invent

They will say “homestay” because other brands say it. Correct them: volunteer house or Marriott-brand option. Invented words recruit invented expectations, including a family they will not meet. Glossary work is interrupting a sentence in the van before it becomes a plan.
